How it works
From no US address to plates in your name.
The whole process happens remotely. You do not travel to Montana, the vehicle does not travel to Montana, and you never stand in a queue.
Tell us about the vehicle
Answer a short set of questions: what the vehicle is, its year, roughly what it is worth, and whether a lender still holds the title. It takes about two minutes and ends with a full price on screen, with every line itemized.
If you have not bought the vehicle yet, that is fine. Many people price the registration first.
We establish your Montana presence
Montana asks for a connection to the state. For visitors we arrange that through a lease of Montana property, which is what replaces the company most people expect to need. If you live in the United States the rules differ, and a Montana LLC is required instead.
We prepare and file the paperwork
We complete the forms and submit them to the state. You sign digitally, from wherever you are, so nothing has to be printed, notarized in person or mailed back to us.
Your temporary tag is issued
A 40-day Montana temporary tag is included on every order at no charge. It lets you drive while the permanent documents are still being processed.
Plates and title arrive
Your plate, registration document and title are shipped to you. Shipping within the United States is included. Sending them outside the country is $145 for the whole order, however many separate items we end up sending.
What you need
- The vehicle's current title, or a manufacturer's certificate of origin if it is new
- A bill of sale, if you have just bought it
- Your own identification from your home country
- An address we can ship documents to, anywhere in the world
What you do not need
- A US driver's license
- A US home address
- A social security number
- A vehicle inspection or emissions test
- To visit Montana, or send the vehicle there
If you live in the United States
This site is written for visitors, but Americans use the same route, usually when living abroad. The one difference is that Montana requires a US resident to hold the vehicle through a Montana LLC. We form one for $300, or $399 if you want ownership kept off the public record. If you already have a company we can use, there is no extra charge.
